“The only thing standing between you and your goal is the bullshit story you keep telling yourself as to why you can’t achieve it” –Jordan Belfort
This quote is as straight forward as can be. We’ve all been guilty of trying to convince ourselves of not doing things because we think we can’t do them. It’s incredible the amount of time we put into self doubt and being dishonest with ourselves. And the thing is, we are really good at talking ourselves out of things. We will listen to ourselves over anybody else, almost every time.
For example: Consider drinking wine. Let’s say you have a well developed taste for fine wine and claim to be able to distinguish between a $10 and a $100 bottle of wine. Because the price is higher, the quality is higher. Except when random blind taste tests are done, many so-called “wine experts” can’t tell the difference between the two
Maybe now you’re thinking, how the hell is he going to relate this back to motivation and fitness? Here’s how: We hear and have lots of misconceptions with a variety of things in life and fitness is no exception. But to put it simply, our biggest misconception is the self deception we hold within. We have so much power that we don’t realize we can harness and turn into something positive. And once we tap into that integrity, it starts to affect other aspects of your life in a positive way. Jordan Belfort, the Wolf of Wall Street, wasn’t a model citizen. But he had a goal, put a plan to action, worked ridiculously hard, and achieved his goal.
Truth, it’s one of our nine virtues.
