Spring break 2014 was a time. Jeff and I made our happy asses to Vegas, then eventually to Lake Havasu, Arizona. Definitely a spring break destination of the west coast. The wolfschmitts vodka was almost as bad as our game with the local women.
One thing I did remember on this trip, was the day we rented a boat. Everyone in the area was talking about cruising down the lake to a spot that people were jumping off a cliff.
We didn’t hesitate, we hustled our .25 BAC asses south to the jump site. Boats lined up, music blasting and people climbing up this rock face that only someone really stupid, or really drunk would do.
Fortunately, we were both. Of the 10 on our boat, 3 of us hopped off and swam to this cliff. As we started climbing, we quickly learned that once you start, there’s no turning back. Steep as shit, sharp rocks and wet hands and feet, we climbed. There wasn’t a lick of safety involved. No lifeguards. No first responders.
No fucks given.
Exactly what we wanted. Once you got to the top and looked down, you have one option, and that’s to jump 50′ into the water. Not a chance to climb back down. Drunk people yelling shit. You commit.
Jump…
Felt like ice cold water…
After that moment was a great sense of pride. Getting back on the boat, it’s a great feeling of accomplishment no matter how dumb it was. And a story we won’t ever forget.
It’s pretty cool the outcomes that can happen when you put your mind to something and you only give yourself one option, to succeed. If that one option is the only option, you will do whatever necessary to achieve it. It’s a simple principle really, but is so damn applicable to so many things in and out of the gym.
So often all you need to do, is something that makes you uncomfortable, and stay there. That’s when you grow and evolve. Or, you can stay in that boat with the rest of them and have no story to tell.
